West Timor Ironwood Double‑Head Crocodile Bench
This is a functional seat, and a sculptural object.
Carved from dense West Timor ironwood, this double‑head crocodile bench reflects a long regional tradition of sculptural furniture. Dimensions 200 x 65 x 40cm
The crocodile is a central ancestral symbol across West Timor, associated with protection, origins, and the island’s creation story.
Each end of the bench is shaped into a crocodile head, giving the piece a balanced, totemic presence.
Ironwood’s natural weight and durability make the bench exceptionally stable, with a deep brown grain that develops a rich patina over time. Traditionally carving has done by hand, leaving subtle tool marks that highlight the maker’s craft
